Belgium : support for STIB employees !

Accueil > Sectors > Transport > Belgium : support for STIB employees !

In May 2020, more than 1,000 employees of the Société des transports intercommunaux de Bruxelles (STIB) exercised their right of withdrawal. Driving buses or trams, they had to do so in order to preserve their health, challenged by the employer’s decision to abolish the preventive measures taken several weeks earlier in the face of the COVID-19 epidemic. Not only the employees, but also the people using the buses and trams were in danger ! Overcrowded and insufficiently disinfected vehicles could only facilitate a second wave .... that we know today.

Although the right of withdrawal exists in Belgian law, the STIB management has punished the employees who exercised it : absences considered unjustified and withdrawal from pay for the days in question. A trial will take place, probably in January 2021. The recognition of the right of withdrawal is a question of respect : respect for workers, respect for health and safety at work, respect for social legislation.

The member organisations of the International Labor Network of Solidarity and Struggle support the action of STIB employees and call for their situation to be made known and for solidarity to be called for.

We are the ones who work, we are the ones who have to decide ... Starting with our health !
