India : Freedom for anti-caste activist Dr Hany Babu

The member organizations of the International Labor Network of Solidarity and Struggle support the call of Indian academics and anti-caste activists for the release of Dr. Hany Babu.

On 28 July 2020, after 5 days of interrogation, the Indian security agency NIA arrested Dr. Hany Babu, Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Delhi, in connection with the Elgaar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon case. He had requested to testify by videoconference in view of the travel risk associated with VIDOC-19, but his request was denied. Professor Babu was pressured to provide false testimony against other activists and to accept allegations of links to the Maoist rebellion, which he refused to do. Professor Babu’s arrest is a continuation of almost a year-long harassment that began with a raid on his home on 10 September 2019.

Academics and anti-caste activists claim that the arrest of Professor Hany Babu, a tireless intellectual and anti-caste activist, is an attempt to penalize Dalitbahujans for raising their voices against caste practices. Professor Babu, who has always worked to ensure equal opportunities for Dalitbahujan students, sees social justice as one of the main goals of schooling. This is yet another example of the current Indian government’s attempt to silence dissenting voices.

In the midst of a global pandemic, this situation is of great concern for the good health and safety of Professor Babu in detention.

This is part of a particularly harsh repressive policy, which attacks migrant workers, destroys labour legislation, criminalises any opposition and increases discrimination. We support the social forces that are resisting !
