Myanmar - Labor Organizations Joint Call for Extended Nationwide WorkStoppage to Save Our Democracy

Accueil > Internacional > Asia > Myanmar - Labor Organizations Joint Call for (...)

We would like to honor and thank workers from different sectors, farmers, and civil servants who participated in Civil Disobedience Movement, as well as, students, youth and civil society organizations who supported the movement. We welcome and support the leadership of Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH).

The labor organizations of Myanmar stand united in support of an extended nationwide workstoppage against the military coup and for the future of Myanmar democracy. We urge the civic leaders of our popular uprising to call for an extended nationwide work-stoppage, and we call upon all workers nationwide, union and non-union alike, to join. We pledge that all of the undersigned labor organizations and our many thousands of members will join the call for an extended nationwide workstoppage.

To continue the economic and business activities as usual, and to delay a general work-stoppage, will only benefit the military as they repress the energy of the Myanmar people ; The time to take action in defense of our democracy is now. The workers of Myanmar are prepared to take action to protect democracy and save our future generations from dictatorship. We believe all Myanmar people are prepared to respond to a call to action.

The work stoppage is a peaceful demonstration of civil disobedience against the illegal military junta. No one can force any Myanmar citizen to work ; We are not slaves to the military junta now and we never shall be. The Civil Disobedience Movement amongst civil servants has led the way for our democracy movement, but it is obvious that we must now escalate our pressure upon the military junta. We call for the expansion of the Civil Disobedience Movement to all Myanmar people starting from March 8 2021 ; the full, extended shutdown of the Myanmar economy. We call on all Myanmar workers to join us in the days that follow until the entire nation has joined the CDM and the extended work-stoppage.

We are not content simply to create martyrs in the struggle for Myanmar democracy. We must win this struggle, and the extended nationwide work-stoppage is the path to the people’s victory. We urge our leaders to call for the extended nationwide work stoppage ; we call upon all workers to join ; and we commit our organizations will join in full force.

(This Extended Nationwide Work-stoppage will be active until we receive our democracy back and we all will participate until the next statement is issued.)
