Strikes at Amazon

Accueil > Sectors > Shops and services > Strikes at Amazon

The member organisations of the International Labor Network of Solidarity and Struggle salute the action of the Amazon workers ; several actions in different countries show the resistance to this shocking bossiness. In difficult conditions, Amazon workers around the world are fighting collectively for their working conditions, their wages, their collective rights... They are organising themselves to be more effective. Our role is to make their struggles known, to support them, to help them build an international coordination of Amazon workers where they decide on their actions.

In Germany, 1,500 strikers took joint action on 13 and 14 October in the warehouses of Bad Hersfeld, Werne, Koblenz, Leipzig and Rheinberg. The demands concerned wages and the collective agreement.

In Italy, at the Amazon site in Brandizzo (near Turin) workers from the subcontracting company ICTS (security and access control) stopped work for 24 hours, with picketing and leaflet distribution. Demands included pay, with the hourly rate frozen at around 6-7 euros gross per hour, with wage negotiations at a standstill, as the collective agreement expired in 2013.

In the United States, Amazon’s management is preparing the final closure of the DCH1 warehouse in Chicago. On 30 September, precarious employees were subjected to blackmail : to be transferred to a job with a schedule from 1.20 to 11.50 a.m., or to be made redundant on 6 December. The Amazonians United collective is calling for full transparency regarding the jobs available at the other sites, the right for all to keep the same working hours as before and various other working time arrangements. In addition, during the night of 1-2 October, several dozen employees at the Shakopee, Minneesota, warehouse left work and gathered to protest against the dismissal of a colleague accused of not meeting his productivity rate target and break time.
