The Prosecutor General’s Office wants to liquidate the entire independent trade union movement in Belarus

Accueil > International (Engl) > Europe > The Prosecutor General’s Office wants to (...)

The Prosecutor General of Belarus has filed a petition with the Supreme Court concerning the termination of the activities of the Free Trade Union of Belarus (SPB), the Free Trade Union of Metalworkers (SPM), the Independent Trade Union of Miners (NPG), the Belarusian Union of Workers in the Radio and Electronic Industry (REP). All these unions are part of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (BDKP), which Prosecutor General Shved is also calling for to be closed.

The agency claims that the activities of the independent unions are political in nature and that its leaders have engaged in "destructive activities". Criminal cases are pending on all the facts.

It should be remembered that previously almost all the leaders of these unions had been arrested. This includes office workers and activists. About two dozen representatives of the independent trade union movement in Belarus are behind bars. Dozens and dozens of trade union activists have been raided and interrogated in recent months and are under a non-disclosure agreement.

If all the above trade unions are liquidated (their main organisations were not only in Minsk, but also in Brest, Grodno, Mozyr, Novopolotsk, Novolukoml, Soligorsk - all over Belarus and in the country’s largest enterprises, including Belaruskali, Naftan, "Grodno Azot", etc.), and who have been engaged for decades in defending workers’ rights, as well as in denouncing violations of their organisations’ rights, it means that no one in the country will be able to fulfil this mission.), and who have been engaged for decades in defending workers’ rights, as well as in denouncing violations of the rights of the members of their organisations, it means that no one in the country will be able to fulfil this mission.

Only the FTUB will remain - a pro-government federation, at whose congresses Alexander Lukashenko traditionally speaks, and whose direction of activities is extremely clear to everyone.
